A Crimson Sunset Falls over Pompeii

Oil on canvas, 100 × 150 cm, 2021

This work approaches historical rupture and its imprint on collective memory through a symbolic lens. The fusion of the wolf and the eagle within a single figure points to the convergence of distinct cultural narratives and centers of power unfolding upon the same historical stage. Pompeii is not treated merely as an archaeological site, but as a threshold—where destruction, transformation, and memory intersect.

Detached from individual identity, the figure occupies a space of representation in which mythological symbols shared across civilizations are brought into a common visual language. The crimson sunset evokes both a natural cycle and a fleeting state of light accompanying an irreversible ending. In this way, the work renders visible the simultaneous generative and destructive forces embedded within historical processes.
