‘Beyaz Saray'da Özgürlüğün Kanat Sesleri’

‘Thrill Is Gone’ çalıyor minik hoparlörümden. Elimin altında tuhaf bir içecek ve ayağımın yanında yatan ve arada yuvarlanıp ayağıma diş atan Helios adında bir kedim var. Evet, gerçekten güneş gibi benim oğlum, altın parçası. Moda girmeye çalışıyorum.

Blues seviyorum. Enstrümanların ya da notaların konuşmalarını da seviyorum. Zaman zaman birbirleriyle sohbet, zaman zaman da birbirleriyle kavga ediyorlar. Ama diyalog var dâimi. Arada şakalaşıyorlar. ‘Blues’ hüznün bir ifadesi İngilizce’de. ‘Blues’ bir müzik türü. Eski zamanlardan, eski dediğim Birleşik Devletler’de kölelerin olduğu zamanlardan kalma. Onların haberleşmesi aslında, onların kölelik zamanlarında birbirleriyle iletişim kurma yöntemleri, onların neşelenmeleri, can sıkkınlıklarının dışa vurumu. Bir zamanlar vahşi olarak görülen, hunharca yakalanan, köle olarak çalıştırılan ve yaşayan, sadece derisi farklı bir renk olan insânın en asil cevabıydı bence blues ve akabinde caz.

Vahşilik mi? Vahşilik doğanın bir parçası. Derisinin rengine bakılmaksızın her insânın bir parça doğası. Bunun kabul edilip edilmemesi gerçekte olanı değiştirmiyor benim nazarımda. Her insân biraz vahşi ve bazen bazıları çok vahşi. Bazen derisi beyaz bir sanat izleyicisiyle vahşiliğin tanımını yapabilirim, bazen bir derisi siyah olan birinin davranışından; çünkü vahşilik canlılığa özgüdür ama insânın egosu bazen vahşiliğin bile canını acıtıyor aşırı vahşiliği ile. Misâl son derece beyaz tenli ve sanat izleyicisi entellektüel bir grup, Marina Abramović’in performansında vahşiliğin sınırlarından çoktan geçmişlerdi.

Şimdi size gelecekte Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin 16. Başkan’ı olacak bir çocuktan bahsedeceğim. Bu çocuk Abraham Lincoln.

“12 Şubat 1809'da Kentucky, Hardin County'de doğdum. Annemle babamın ikisi de Virginia'da, seçkin olmayan ailelerde doğdu - belki de ikinci aile demeliyim. Onuncu yılımda ölen annem Hanks adında bir ailedendi…. Babam ... Kentucky'den ... Indiana'ya götürüldü, sekizinci yılımda .... Hâlâ ormanda birçok ayı ve diğer vahşi hayvanların yaşadığı vahşi bir bölgeydi. Orada büyüdüm…. Tabii geldiğim yaşımda pek bir şey bilmiyordum. Yine de bir şekilde okuyabiliyor, yazabiliyor ve parçalayabiliyordum… ama hepsi bu kadardı.” diye anlatmış kendini.

Geçinmek için çiftçilik, odun kesmek, kaptanlık dahil birçok iş yapmıştı. Politikaya atılmadan evvel ise artık bir avukattı. Böylesi bir yoksulluğa doğup, okula bile gidememiş; geçinmek için bahsi geçen işlerde çalışmış olan biri için İngilizce hâkimiyeti, hitabet yeteneği, kendi çabalarıyla öğrendikleri ile çok başarılı bir avukat olması şüphesiz ki hayranlık vericiyken, Lincoln bununla yetinmeyerek başarılı bir politikacı sonra üstüne bir de Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin 16. Başkan’ı da olmuştu.

Abraham Lincoln’u târihe yazan asıl yaptığı, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ni ikinci kez bir kez daha kurmak, Blues’a kulak vermek ve onu âzâd etmek olmuştu. Gemide çalıştığı zamanlarda hayvanca muamele ile davranılıp, zincirlerle bağlanmış olan, bir eşya kadar bile değer görmeksizin satılan siyahi köleleri gördüğünde çok etkilenmiş. Öyle ya, cam bir vazo satarken bile satıcı kırılmasın diye nâzikçe tutar, nâzikçe koyar geri yerine. Müşteri bakarken son derece dikkatlidir, aman kırılmasın der. Bir cam vazonun gördüğü özeni bir insanın görmemesi kalp kırıcı hattâ bence onur da kırıcı. Lincoln de kırılmış görünce.

1832’de Eyalet Meclisi’ne aday oluşu ile başlayan politika serüveni, 1860’da Cumhuriyetçi Parti’nin başkan adayı olarak rakîbi Stephen Douglas’ı yenerek başkanlık koltuğuna oturması ile nihâyet bulmuştu. Buraya kadar basitçe Lincoln’den bahsettim. Şimdi biraz neden Lincoln, onu anlatacağım.

Başkan olan Lincoln’un kölelik karşıtı tavrından rahatsız olan güneyliler, Lincoln daha henüz göreve bile başlamadan Güney Carolina ve altı eyalet Birlik’ten ayrılmıştı. Ve birlikte Amerika Konfederatif Devletleri’ni kurmuşlardı. Bunun üstüne güneyliler ile savaşa giren Lincoln, bu savaşı da sahip olduğu konumunu kazandığı gibi entellektüel yönü, stratejik çalışan aklı, teknolojiyi kullanması ile kazanmıştı. Entellektüel dediysem kağıt kalem değil tabii savaş silahları. Ama yine de ancak bir entellektüelin önemseyeceği şeyleri dikkate almış olması da o özelliğini konuya dahil etmeme vesile oluyor.

Telgrafın hızlı haberleşme gücü, demiryollarının asker ve cephane taşıma avantajından yararlanan Lincoln, güneylilerin demiryollarını tahrip etmeyi de ihmal etmemiş. Kendi cephesinde üretime, insan gücüne ve sanayileşmeye oldukça önem vererek hem bu savaşı kazanmıştı hem de aslında bugün halâ Birleşik Devletler tarafından kullanılan savaş stratejisinin temelini oluşturmuştu.

1861’de Kuzey ve Güney eyaletleri arasında bir iç savaş çıkınca konu en sonunda köleliğe gelmiş ve Ocak 1863’te yayınladığı Özgürlük Bildirgesi ile siyahilerin köleliklerine son vermişti:

“…Ve yetkimin gereği olarak ve yukarıda bahsedilen amaç doğrultusunda emrediyor ve beyân ediyorum ki, belirtilen eyaletlerde veya eyalet mahallerinde köle olarak tutulan tüm insânlar bundan böyle özgür kılınacaklardır ve ordu ve deniz kuvvetleri dahil olmak üzere, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Hükümeti bundan böyle, söz konusu insânların özgürlüklerini tanıyacak ve koruyacaktır. Ve ben, özgür kılınan insânlara, kişisel savunmaları için mecbur olmadıkça hiçbir şiddete başvurmamalarını ihtâren emrediyor ve onlara ortam izin verdikçe mâkûl bir maaş karşılığında sebatla çalışmalarını tavsiye ediyorum. Ve yine beyân ediyor ve bilinmesini istiyorum ki, bu insânlardan şartları uygun olanları kalelerde, mevzîlerde, istasyonlarda ve diğer yerlerde konuşlandırılmak üzere Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ordusuna kabûl edileceklerdir…”

Her iki tarafın çok kan kaybettiği bu iç savaş Güney ordularının teslim olmasıyla 1865’te son bulmuştu. Anayasada yapılan düzenlemelerle köleliği topyekûn kaldırmış, siyahlara yurttaşlık hakkı ve oy hakkı vermişti.

Abraham Lincoln, hem Amerika’yı ikinci sefer kurarak devletin babası olarak görülmüştü, hem de toplumdaki ırkçı ikiliğe son vererek gönüllere yerleşmişti. Benim gönlüme nasıl yerleşti peki? Amerika bana uzak diyarlar. Ama size bahsettim diğer çalışmaların metinlerinde de. Azimli, kararlı, tutkulu, adâlet arayan rûhum, bu ve bunun gibi birtakım özelliklere sahip olan insânlara istemsizce çekiliyor. Çoğu zaman hayâl kırıklıklarımı bunlardan bâzılarının eksikliği ile yaşadım. İşte bu sebeple Lincoln sözleriyle rûhumu heyecanlandırıyor.

“Başarısızlığa karşı doğuştan bir nefretim var.” diyor meselâ. Sonra, “Hazırlayacağım ve bir gün şansım gelecek.” diyor. Kendimi bildim bileli hep yaptığım da buydu aslında. Dâima hazırlıyorum. Tam hazır olduğumda, her şeyin olması gereken doğru zaman geldiğinde tereddütsüzce benim için açılacak olan o muazzam kapıdan geçeceğim.

Başka bir yerde “Neredeyse tüm insânlar zorluklara dayanabilir, ancak bir adamın karakterini test etmek istiyorsanız, ona güç verin.” diyor. Hepimiz haklı olduğunu biliyoruz Lincoln’ün. Dünya târihi bunları çok yazdı zîrâ. Özgürlük ve eşitlikle ilgili daha fazla sözünü dillendirmek bile gerekli değil.

‘Işığın Daveti’ serisinde kendisini, sâhip olduğu sâdelikle Beyaz Saray’da hayâl ettim. Amerika’nın beyaz başlı kartalı ancak Lincoln ile bir olabilirdi gözümde. Her ikisi de özgürlük için var olmuş. Tabiatları gereği bir Kova’nın özgürlüğü ve bir kartalın özgürlüğü.

‘The Wing Sounds Of The Freedom In White House’

It’s playing ‘Thrill Is Gone’ on my tiny speakers. There’s a weird drink under my hand and there’s my cat named Helios that’s laying down next to my feet and rolling up sometimes and biting my feet. Yes, my son is really like the Sun, a piece of gold. I am trying to get into mood.

I like Blues. I like the conversation of the instruments and notes as well. They are chatting with each other time to time, also they are having fights with each other time to time. But there’s always a dialogue. Sometimes they’re joking to each other. ‘Blues’ is an expression of sadness in English. ‘Blues’ is a music genre, remains from the old days. I mean from upon the times there were slaves in United States. It was their communication actually, their communicating way with each other in the slavery times, their cheering up, the expression of their frustrations. The ‘Blues’ and then ‘Jazz’ was most royal answer to the ones of whose only difference was their skin colour who had been seemed as the wild once upon times, had been caught brutally, worked and lived.

Wildness? It’s a part of the nature. It’s a part nature of each human being independent the skin colors. It doesn’t change the reality in my eyes the acceptance of this or not. Every human is wild a bit, sometimes some of them are very wild. I can define the wildness by a white art viewer, sometimes by a behavior of a black skinned one; because wildness is peculiar to the life but sometimes the human ego hurts the wildness with over wildness even. A very white skinned and art viewer intellectual group had passed the limits of wildness already in the performance by Marina Abramović.

Now I am going to mention about a kid who is going to be the 16th President of the America United States. This kid is Abraham Lincoln.

He had told himself; “I was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished families–second families, perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks…. My father … removed from Kentucky to … Indiana, in my eighth year…. It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up…. Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow, I could read, write and cipher … but that was all.”

He had done lots of jobs to live including farming, chopping, captaincy. He was a lawyer before his political career. For a one who had been born into such a poverty and couldn’t had gone to the school; for a one who worked in those jobs that mentioned before to live; no doubt it is very admirable to had been a successful lawyer with his excellent English level, speech talent, the things he had learned by his efforts. But he hadn’t been confined with these, he had been also 16th President of the USA as well.

The thing that actually writing the Abraham Lincoln into history was rebuilding the United States of America second time one more time, giving an ear to the Blues and setting it free. He had effected when he had seen the black slaves who chained, treating brutally, selling as not valuable an item even while he was working in the ship. A glass vase has been holds gently by the seller, puts back gently to do not break it. A customer is also very careful while looking at it. It is heartbreaking that seen the kindness for a glass vase not for a human. Lincoln had broken too when he has seen that.

His political journey has started with standing for Statehouse in 1832, continued with being president in the election that he had run against to Stephen Douglas from the Republican Party in 1860. I’ve talked about the Lincoln basically until here. I am going to tell about why Lincoln now.

The Southerners had been disturbed, South Carolina and 6 states more had left the Union because of the attitudes of Lincoln against racism when Lincoln had won the elections. These states declared themselves to be a sovereign nation, the Confederate States of America. Then The war has started between Lincoln and Southerners and Lincoln had won the war with his intellectuality -as won the election-, strategic thinking and using the technology. I don’t mean is the pen or paper his guns even if I’ve said he is an intellectual. But still he had minded the things that could have minded by an intellectual person, so I emphasize his feature this reason.

Lincoln had gotten the advantages of the fast communication power of the telegraph, transportation of the army and arms by railways, also he had not to neglected ravaging of the southern railways. He had both won this war and constructed the war strategy of the USA even still use today by minding producing, human sources and industrialization.

When a civil war had started between north and south states, the affair finally had come to slavery in 1861 and Lincoln had stopped slavery of the black people by announcing the Emancipation Proclamation in January of 1863:

“And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defence; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages.

And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service.”

The civil war that both sides lost a lot had ended by surrendering of the Southern armies in 1865. Lincoln had given the citizenship and voting rights to black people and removed the slavery totally by the changes in constitution.

Abraham Lincoln had been seen the father of the state and placed into the hearts by both rebuilding the USA and removing the racism in community. Okay but how he had been placed into my heart? America is distant land to me. But I’ve mentioned it in the articles of my other artworks too. My soul which is determined, decisive, passionate and looking for the justice charmed unexpectedly by the people who have some of these features. I mostly lived my disappointments because lack of some of these features. That’s the reason why the Lincoln makes my soul excited by his words.

He says “I have a congenital aversion to failure.” for example. Then, he says “I will prepare and someday my chance will come.”. That’s all what I do since I knew myself actually. I always prepare. I am going to get in from the great door that is going to open to me without a doubt when I am exactly ready, when the right time has come.

He says “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” in another place. We all know that Lincoln is right. These kind of things have been written in the world history a lot. It’s even unnecessary to mention of his words about freedom and equality.

I’ve imagined in White House himself with his simplicity he has in the series of ‘The Call Of The Light’. The white headed eagle of the America would’ve been only the Lincoln in my vision. Both of them existed for freedom. According to their natures, a freedom of an Aquarius and freedom of an eagle.
